How to Shop Smart this Sale Season

Sales season can be so exciting! The thrill of rapid price drops, seeing a good bargain and knowing you're winning at life with these purchases gives a surge of adrenaline through your system-and it can also feel overwhelming. Between the non-stop email blasts and endless "limited time offers", it's easy to slip into buying things you think you need...only to end up with more clutter, duplicates and buyer's remorse.

As a professional organizer here in South Florida, I work with busy moms and professionals every day who tell me the same thing, "I bought this because it was on sale, and honestly, I don't even use it"

Let's change that.

Here's some tips on how to shop with intention, save money, protect your space from clutter, and keep your cool when the sales start ringing in.

1. Begin with a clear plan: Before hitting the checkout line (or checkout cart on the app), pause and ask yourself:

  • Do I already own something that serves this purpose?

  • Will it truly help me run my home smoother?

  • Do I have a designated place at home to store this? Where will this item's 'new home' be?

  • Does this purchase support my goals or distract me from it?

Sales create a sense of urgency, making it easy to forget what we already own. Taking a few minutes to think through these questions can prevent duplicates, overspending, and cluttered spaces.

2. Make a "needs" list (and stick to it): One of the best organization tools you can have isn't a fancy bin or overly complicated system.

It's a list.

Crazy, I know!

Create a running list of items you genuinely need to make your life run smoother and more enjoyable. Then, when sales hits, you're not acting on impulse, but rather, checking items off your list. You get what you need, and you get it at a better rate! Win-win!

This tip is particularly helpful for busy parents juggling work, school schedules, home life, hosting commitments and outdoor living. A list keeps you grounded when the sales trends get loud.

3. Beware of 'stocking up' just because it's cheap(er): Bigger doesn't = better. Especially when you're working with limited cabinet, closet and storage space. Bulk-shopping saves you money only if:

  • You will use up the item before the expiration dates comes

  • You have the space to store it

  • It doesn't create more clutter.

Bear in mind that in humid climates like South Florida, storing too much too tightly together can lead to mold, mildew and insect-related issues. Especially in garages and laundry rooms. Being intentional with quantities is important.

4. Adding to your cart and waiting 24 hours: I practice what I preach here, because I too easily get hyped up when I see a good deal. After quite a few impulse purchases that lead me to have buyer's remorse and have to make another return trip to UPS, I've implemented this technique that saves me from this trouble.

I add things to my cart (hello Amazon Prime!) then I wait 24-48 hours. If I still need or want the item as badly as 2 days ago, then yes, I'll make the purchase. More often that not, they hype dies down and I end up removing things from my cart. Imagine how much money and time I've saved with this one trick!

5. Don't buy what doesn't fit your space: Do you have where to put the items you're about to purchase? If it doesn't fit, it becomes clutter. Always measure:

  • Shelf width, depth and height (and take into account if the shelves are height adjustable)

  • Cabinet depth

  • How much cleared space you have under-the-sink cabinets (the plumbing gets in the way more than you realize)

Write down these measurements and take it with you shopping. It'll save you from lots of great plans that fail due to inadequate planning.

6. Choose quality over quantity: A lower price tag doesn't necessarily make it a good investment. If the item in question is something you'll be using daily or weekly, consider buying the sturdier and more durable option-even if it comes with a higher price tag. This especially applies to:

  • Kitchen utensils and appliances

  • Food storage containers

  • Linens & Beddings

  • Outdoor Essentials

7. Don't let the buzzword control your decisions: The word "SALE" cam make even people with calmer temperaments feel pressured to make the move. Marketers work to have us think emotionally, not logically.

Remember: It's not a good deal if I don't actually need it.

8. If you're overwhelmed, bring in a professional organizer: Shopping with intention is wonderful tool to utilize. But staying organized afterward is vital.

If you live in South Florida and are tire of:
