7 Behind the Door Storage Ideas
February 1, 2025
Whether you’re in a cozy apartment or a spacious family home, finding innovative storage solutions is a priority for many. One commonly overlooked spot with tons of storage potential? The back of your door! From closets to pantries, bedroom doors, and more, we’ll show you just how versatile this space can be for organizing essentials and maximizing every inch.

1. Bathroom Robe Hooks
Hooks over the bathroom door helps keep your bath robes and towels dry, preventing mildew buildup and instantly providing great storage space. Because it's behind the door, it also hides the ugly and helps give your bathroom the neat, polished look you crave

2. Narrow Bookshelf
You can use the dead space behind your door to create a narrow bookshelf by installing picture ledge shelves. This is a great storage solution for a small bedroom where you don't have the flexibility to home freestanding furniture. This also creates a cute little book nook for your little readers.

3. Pop-Up Gift Wrapping Station
Here’s a clever idea on how you can do that using the modular Elfa storage products. This one uses a central bracket that’s fixed into the door so you won’t see any brackets over the top when the cupboard is closed. A similar and more cost-friendly option is to take an over-the-door shoe organizer, and cut the bottom seam of 4 or 5 shoe slots (vertically). This will allow you to put wrapping paper rolls through them and they won't unravel. Take special care to not cut open the seam of the lowest shoe slot, or the rolls will hit the ground.

4. Fedora Hooks
Hanging Hats! You know those beautiful beach hats with the wide rims? The Fedoras that take up way too much real estate in your closet? Hooks behind the door is a practical and beautiful solution. I call that a win-win!

5. Shoes, of course!
The over-the-door shoe organizer that is so versatile, it can be used to organize almost anything? How about we go back to the basics and organize...shoes! Cleared floor, here we go!

6. Spice Rack
The wall space inside a pantry (or with the right racks, the back of your pantry doors) is the perfect spot to create a dreamy spice rack like the photo to the right. Don’t forget to complete the look with labels and you can buy those fabulous spice labels on Amazon here

7. Wine Racks-but for something else...
Those fluffy towels tend to take up a-lot of real estate inside the cabinets. So why don't we try something a little unconventional, and utilize a wine rack to hang rolled towels behind the door?
We have curated a behind-the-door list to help ease this process for you!
